Day 10: The Daily Scoop

With all the warm weather we’ve been having in Maine this week, ice cream has been on our minds. It got us thinking: if every Apogee trip were an ice cream flavor, what would they be? What would an epic bike ride in Canada taste like? How would the French Alps translate into the flavors of a sweet frozen treat? Read on to hear all about our groups’ days and which flavor they think they would be. As always, check out @apogee.adventures on Instagram for more awesome content.

Skip to a Specific Trip: AKMC, AXA, AXBCRM, CRMC, CSVI, DEX, DMCC, ECC, NWMC, VM

Alaska Mountains & Coast (AKMC)

AKMC spent another day exploring the coast of Alaska by kayak! They woke up and paddled back to Seward, taking in the views and spotting as much wildlife as they could along the way. After landing back in Seward, the crew shopped for supplies for the next couple of days before heading to camp for the evening. With all that time at sea today, their scoop of the day seemed clear to us… Ben & Jerry’s “Fish Food.”

Alps Explorer A (AXA)

Oh me, oh my, AXA had quite an exciting day… not only did they hike from France into Italy, but they also celebrated a birthday! After waking up to balloons and a breakfast party, they hit the trails. The views were stunning, and the sandwiches on fresh French bread were amazing. They got into camp and continued the birthday celebrations before hitting the hay, preparing for another great day tomorrow. With all this birthday excitement, the ice cream flavor is clear: cake batter (with rainbow sprinkles, of course)!

Alps Explorer B (AXB)

The AXB crew crushed today, taking in all the views the Alps had to offer. They walked through adorable French villages throughout the day and stopped at a shady spot for sandwiches on fresh French bread. The French food theme continued at dinner, when their French guide helped them cook up some traditional French mountain food (now we’re really jealous). With all this sandwich eating and exploring the Alps on the go, the AXB flavor of the day is an ice cream sandwich!

Colorado’s Rocky Mountains (CRM)

Parting is such sweet sorrow. The CRMers packed up camp today for the last time and headed to the airport. They said goodbye to their friends before boarding their flights home to their families with so many amazing stories to tell! As they spent the last nine days exploring the Rockies, we thought it was only fitting that their ice cream flavor matched: the one and only Rocky Road!

Costa Rica Mountains & Coast (CRMC)

The CRMC crew hit the trails today, working with the folks at the ecolodge where they are staying to do some trail maintenance. While on the trail, they saw many different kinds of wildlife and even a rainbow tree (its bark is multicolored when peeled back)! With all the bright colors they’ve been seeing in the rainforest, there’s really only one scoop that fits the bill… Rainbow Sherbet!

Caribbean Service Virgin Islands (CSVI)

The CSVI crew spent the morning doing one last service project, clearing invasive species off the beach. After a rewarding morning of work, the group hit the beach for one final swim! They finished off the day with a final dinner out to celebrate their time together and watched the sunset. Hard to believe this crew will be leaving the Caribbean tomorrow. Their ice cream flavor of the day is coconut: sweet, refreshing, and a reminder of their time on the island!

Dolomite Mountains & Croatian Coast (DMCC)

Goodbye, Dolomite Mountains… hello, Croatian Coast! Today, our iconic DMCC crew had a big transit day to Premantura, Croatia, where they’ll spend the next few days kayaking, hiking, and enjoying the beautiful Mediterranean coast. After their long bus ride, they couldn’t wait to shake off the travel day with a swim, a game of soccer, and a classic (if not messy) Apogee tradition, the “Fudge Bag”! To celebrate the Croatian salt air and DMCC’s sweet treat of the day, what could be better than salted chocolate for their ice cream flavor?

Europe Coast to Coast (ECC)

Our ECC crew crushed it today and entered their third country of the trip! They packed up camp and said goodbye to Belgium as they headed into France. On their way to camp, they explored some awesome tunnels and gateways that made them excited for their next few days in France. For the flavor of the day, we wanted to mark this big moment of crossing into a new country. What could be more fitting than French vanilla in a waffle cone to celebrate their journey from Belgium into France?

Maine’s Downeast Explorer (DEX)

DEX had their challenge day today, hiking Maine’s tallest mountain. They woke up early, ate breakfast, and built the stoke for what was about to be an amazing day. They took in the views from way up high and kept their eyes peeled for any moose friends they might be lucky enough to spot in the Baxter wilderness. The flavor of the day for our dear DEXers is Moose Tracks! Only one crew had service for photos today but stay tuned for more to come tomorrow when they are back in cell service.

Northwest Mountains & Coast (NWMC)

NWMC had a big day full of adventures and great views. It was challenge day, and after epic summits, they cooled off in a stream. Ice cream was enjoyed to celebrate the day before heading back to camp for dinner, a few games, and hitting the hay. As they spent the whole day exploring the Cascades and all the area’s wonder, Cascade Cherry ice cream is their scoop of the day!

Vermont to Montreal (VM)

Holy smokes, look at VM go! This speedy squad finished their ride today in record time! They pedaled into camp before noon, excited for a fun-filled afternoon of games. While they had a blast playing old faithful, Hacky Sack, the crew also made the most of their campground’s ping-pong tables and giant chessboard! It’ll be an early night for these all-star cyclists as they prep for their final push to Montreal tomorrow. We can’t wait to see those big smiles of achievement when they finally make it to la métropole! While this crew left Vermont behind yesterday for the Canadian leg of their journey, no ice cream flavor better encapsulates VM than Vermont’s specialty: the Maple Creemee.
