Our Last Round of Leader Introductions for the 2022 Season!

Leader Name: Carlton Bragg (he/him/his)

2022 Trips: Maine Coast Junior and New England Mountains & Coast

Hometown: Huntersville, North Carolina

School: Washington and Lee University, Class of 2024

Certifications: Wilderness First Aid, CPR, Lifeguard

Highlights of the past year: Leading a group of college freshmen on a backpacking orientation trip in Shenandoah National Park, and skiing some fresh powder in Park City, Utah! 

Favorite Outdoor Activities: Backpacking, fly fishing, mountain biking, skiing, running, sailing, and doing farm work with his family.

Where you can find Carlton when he is not adventuring outside: He loves to explore the backroads and mountain views of the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia, and you can usually find him sitting on his porch with friends! 

Other reasons Carlton is the absolute coolest: He grew up on a small family farm with 15 cousins, and he loves doing farm work – if you ever need some firewood chopped, he’s your guy! Carlton also guided and mentored young boy scouts on adventure expeditions during high school as a member of his local BSA leadership team. Last summer, Carlton worked on a remote ranch in Colorado, and he’s a novice banjo player, too!

2022 Trips: Maine Coast Junior and New England Mountains & Coast

Hometown: Meriden, New Hampshire

School: University of Vermont, Class of 2024

Major(s): Sociology and Forestry

Certifications: Wilderness First Aid and CPR

Highlights from the past year: Moved to Burlington, VT, tried backcountry skiing for the first time, and painted a mural of a cow! Sounds like a pretty good year to us.

Favorite Outdoor Activities: Hiking, swimming, mountain biking, skiing, and hammocking.

Where you can find Scout when she is not hiking with her dogs Goose and Bill: She loves to read, paint, cook, and woodwork! She also plays soccer and basketball for UVM.

Other reasons Scout is the absolute coolest: She thru-hiked the Long Trail with a childhood friend during
COVID, and she spent the summer in 2018 coaching soccer teams in Cochabamba, Bolivia. She was also in a circus for 8 summers straight! 

 

Leader Name: Anna Messinger (she/her/hers)

2022 Trips: New England Mountains & Coast and Maine Coast Junior 

Hometown: Burlington, Vermont

School: Bowdoin College, Class of 2021

Major(s): Biology and Environmental Studies

Certifications: Emergency Medical Technician, Wilderness First Responder, CPR, Lifeguard

Favorite Outdoor Activities: Backcountry skiing, backpacking, swimming in swimming holes, and canoeing!

Highlights of the past year: Going cross country skiing this winter. In particular, exploring some abandoned railroad tracks near her house in the fresh Maine snow!  

Where you can find Anna when she is not adventuring outside: Cooking, or knitting and sewing clothes!

Other reasons Anna is the niftiest: She’s spent the past year teaching math to first graders, and is perfecting her own boba tea recipe! 

 

Leader Name: Clare Tiedemann

2022 Trips: Maine Coast Junior and New England Mountains & Coast

Hometown: Meriden, New Hampshire

School: Oberlin College, Class of 2022

Certifications: Wilderness First Aid and CPR

Highlights of the past year: Clare placed 5th in the country in the NCAA Heptathlon! That means she is fifth best in the country at: 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m dash, long jump, javelin throw, and 800m dash!

Where you can find Clare when she is not crushing college sports: Dancing, creating art, playing guitar, or just getting outside!

Favorite Outdoor Activities: Hiking and running! Clare likes to use her feet!

Other reasons Clare is the absolute coolest: Clare writes sketch comedy and likes meeting new people so you know that means she is a hoot on the hiking trail! She also is a dancer and has taught many groups of children how to dance for performances. Plus, she spent three months in New Zealand with NOLS!

 

Leader Name: Josh Calianos (he/him/his)

2022 Trips: New England Mountains & Coast and Maine Coast Junior 

Hometown: Northampton, Massachusetts

School: Dartmouth College, Class of 2022

Major: Quantitative Social Science

Certifications: Wilderness First Aid and CPR

Highlights from the past year: Skied Tuckerman Ravine for the first time, wrote an honor’s thesis about Covid-19’s effects on the opioid epidemic, and directed the Dartmouth Fifty (a nonstop hike over the 53-mile stretch of the AT that Dartmouth maintains).

Favorite Outdoor Activities: Skiing, biking, hiking, and camping.

Where you can find Josh when he is not skiing or biking: Probably doing crossword puzzles!

Other reasons Josh is awesome: He studied abroad in Berlin, then spent four weeks bikepacking across Europe on his own! Josh was an Outing Club liaison during the Dartmouth first-year orientation group and co-wrote and choreographed original songs to welcome new students to campus. Josh is also an Apogee Alumnus, having participated in our Coast to Quebec15 and America Coast to Coast ‘16 cycling trips.

2022 Trips: New England Mountains & Coast and Maine Coast Junior 

Hometown: Davenport, Iowa

School: St. Olaf College, Class of 2022

Major(s): Psychology and Neuroscience

Certifications: Wilderness First Aid, CPR, Lifeguard

Highlights of 2022: Emma spent the month of January road tripping through the National Parks of the southeast with two college friends!

Favorite Outdoor Activities: Walking, hiking, swimming, and canoeing!

Where you can find Emma when she is not adventuring outside: Reading, writing, thrifting, inventing new food creations, and finding new restaurants, coffee shops, and bookstores to explore!  

Other reasons Emma is the absolute coolest: She was a Peer Advisor at St. Olaf, where she counseled first-gen and low-income students during their transition to college and advised them on professional development and networking practices.
