Day 42: Trail Tunes of the Day!

Every day on trip has a special sort of energy. Some days can only be matched by a the beat of a Queen verse, while others move to the rhythm of a peaceful, soft 1979 Simon and Garfunkel tune. Today, we have hand-picked songs that beautifully illustrate the magic of each trip’s day. While these songs cover a wide variety of genres and emotion, they all have one thing in common: complete and utter epicness

Alaska Mountains & Coast A (AKMCA)

AKMCA is fresh out of the backcountry! As our AKMCA neared the end of their backcountry section, they marched across beautiful alpine valleys to the beat of… The Final Countdown! They held their chests high as they propelled out of the deep wilderness and back into the frontcountry. They spent their morning taking in the beauty of the landscape one last time before setting down their heavy packs. The group settled into camp for the night for some well-deserved shut eye before heading to Seward tomorrow to resupply.

Alaska Mountains & Coast B (AKMCB)

A backcountry adventure stands before AKMCB unlike no other! Today the group prepared for their Eagle River adventure in Anchorage. Their backcountry prep song of choice? The Start of Something New from this generation’s most beloved musical: High School Musical. The group grocery shopped, learned to pack their packs and readied themselves to experience Alaska’s untouched wilderness. This surely is the start of something new, and we know it will be magical!

Alps Explorer A (AX)

The Alps crew continued their majestic trek on the TMB today, filled with picturesque views and good conversation. Their steps up and over the European passes were accompanied by a classic tune: Careless Whisper. Why, you ask? Well, it’s the only song that could possibly match the level of this crew’s cheesiness today… After their hike, the group purchased SIXTEEN blocks of cheese to go with all of their personal loaves of bread!

Cape Cod & the Islands (CI)

Our Cape Cod crew spent their second day Martha’s Vineyard giving back to the community! The group biked a few miles over Island Grown Initavie, an an organization who works to provide access to healthy food all over the island. We can only imagine that they were singing along to, Count on Me by Bruno Mars. This classic tune matched the energy of their afternoon!

Caribbean Service (CS)

Our Caribbean Service group had quite the packed day today! They packed up the van and headed over to Cabo Rojo for the next leg of their trip, and still managed to squeeze in an impressive four hours of service. The song of CS’s day is El Camino by Orion Sun, a beautiful melody about memories from Puerto Rico! The crew is stoked to get to know a new part of the island and contribute to more organizations, and we can’t wait to keep following along with their amazing work!!

Costa Rica Mountains & Coast (CRMC)

It was a big day for our group down in Costa Rica, filled with exploration, hiking and games! The only song one could possibly match the energy of their busy day would be, of course, Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. After breakfast, the group headed out on a day hike to explore the rainforest. After harmonizing with the sounds of mother nature in the morning, the group took a visit to the sauna. Sparse noises of *galileo* .. *galileo* .. *galileo* echoed in the kitchen as the group made their very own tortillas for dinner. Harmonies peacefully faded out as the group made their way to bed to dream of the adventure that awaits them tomorrow.

Golden State Adventure (GSA)

Ahh, California… the Golden State. There is an abundance of songs that could match this group‘s adventure, with tunes by Led Zeppelin, Katy Perry, and even Tupac. However, the Mamas & the Papas take the cake today, with the classic jam California Dreamin’. The crew spent their first full day together hiking in Point Reyes and catching the first beautiful views that the Sunshine State has in store for them. They spent the afternoon playing plenty of games and getting to know each other, and we have no doubt that they will live their California life to the fullest for the rest of the trip!! We’re dreaming of California in the office, that is for sure!

Iceland Mountains & Coast (IMC)

Our Iceland Mountains and Coast team bid farewell today – and we are sure they jammed out to Fare Thee Well by Oscar Isaac and Marcus Mumford. It was an epic end to their trip and we will sure miss this group of smiling faces!

Maine’s Downeast Explorer (DEXA)

These Maine Downeasters are now well acquainted with all of the wonder and beauty that comes with backcountry living. They are spending their days between the beechs and birches, slowly humming the tune of How Lucky by Kurt Vile and John Prine. Today, the group day hiked a section of the Appalachian Trail, taking in mother nature’s glory and enjoying each other’s company. They cooked up a scrumptious dinner after a full day on trail. By night they are sure to be softly singing the lyrics “Hey, how lucky can one man* (*Apogee group!) get?” We can’t wait to see all those photos when they emerge.

Maine’s Downeast Explorer (DEXB)

This Downeast group had a day that can only be met by the soft yet sturdy and sublime tune of Featherstone by The Paper Kites. They peacefully explored beautiful Acadia National Park – this time on foot, as they summited Bald Mountain and a few other peaks as well! As they looked out at Maine’s beautiful coastal views, the clouds sang from above: “And I’m feeling fine, we’ve made it to the coastline.”

New England Mountains & Coast (NEMC)

Our New England Mountain and Coast group gave their families hugs goodbye as they met their new buddies for the next ten days! They drove north towards New Hampshire and greeted the White Mountains with smiles on their faces. The song to match their day? First Day of My Life by the Bright Eyes. (Of course, this is roughly their ~4,400-5,200th day of their lives … but this is the first day of their life as a member of the Apogee family!) We are so excited for this crew to have a blast in the mountains and on the coast with their new friends.

Northwest Explorer (NWX)

Our NWX rock stars are Movin’ Out (Billy Joel, folks) of the backcountry today after an impressive five-night excursion! This crew had some extraordinary days in the North Cascades, complete with stunning views and on-trail bonding. After needing to make quite the detour around some closed roads, they made their way towards Bellingham on wheels. We know our parents at home have awaiting pics at home, audience, so here they are in all their glory!

Pacific Coast (PC)

Picture this: you awake in Northern California, legs sore from two weeks of hardcore biking, to the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. What was on the docket after taking in the Pacific paradise from your tent? Absolutely nothing but the sheer responsibility of resting and enjoying the company of your buddies. PC enjoyed a well-deserved rest day in Mendocino, complete with plenty of ocean time. This easy feeling can only be captured in musical terms by the all-star crew: Frank Ocean, Jay-Z, and Tyler, The Creator, with their simple tune Biking. What a spectacular day to be a member of the PC crew! Unfortunately, we weren’t able to snag a blog photo of today, but we’ll be sure to get double ones up tomorrow!

Pyrenees Mountains and Coast (PMC)

Today was a stellar, stunning, wonderful day for our PMC peeps (and all of the other positive adjectives). It was their first full day hiking Carros de Foc, which is one of the longest and steepest days of the trip – and we heard this group knocked it out of the park! The hike was filled with spectacular vistas and ended with a tasty dinner to refuel for tomorrow’s adventure. Their adventurous day could be compared to Queen Rosalía’s playful song Tuya: one could say that this crew danced through the Pyrenees today. Way to go, PMC!

Vermont to Montreal A (VMA)

A full week into their trip and this VM crew has this biking thing down! They breezed through the Lake Champlain Causeway today, with nothing but bikes, buddies, and an endless view of the water. We couldn’t imagine a better way to spend a day in Vermont! We love Vermont almost as much as VT singer Noah Kahan, so we have to give it up for Stick Season… but it isn’t stick season just yet – look at all that sun our group is enjoying. As a mid-ride surprise, the group pealed off for a cool treat! What a wonderful, wonderful Vermont day for this equally wonderful crew!!!

Vermont to Montreal B (VMB)

On this lovely rest/kayak day, the group spent their day chatting, listening to the birds overhead and watching the clouds come and go as they kayaked along under the sun on Lake Champlain. Oh, and did we mention they were surprised with a classic Ben & Jerry’s Vermonster?! It was quite a hit. We know they are quietly singing Queen’s Bicycle Racer as they head to sleep (“I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride my bike!”). We know they can’t wait to be back on their bikes and riding again tomorrow! Keep it up, VMB!
