Today is Tuesday folks, and you know what that means: Trivia Tuesday! That’s right, with a bunch of different trips in the field on this trivia Tuesday, we come bearing adorable photos, some awesome updates, and a whole new batch of trivia facts to brighten your day. Come along to truly immerse yourself in a fun fact classroom session on where our trips are right now, and of course, to see what these incredible students have gotten up to today! Alaska Mountains & Coast (AKMC)
Starting off strong with Alaska, our trivia for today is that their state flag was designed by 13 year old Benny Benson in 1926 as part of a territory wide contest. Who knows, maybe one of these campers could design a state flag next as they have just arrived this morning into beautiful Anchorage, Alaska. The crew got off the plane ready to take on their expedition through Alaska, making their way to their first campground of the trip. They played fun games, enjoyed a nice dinner, and got to know each other well to enjoy the momentous days to come.
Alps Explorer (AX)
Au revoir France et Ciao Italia! Today, our campers entered the universe of pizza and pasta, so, for our not-so-shocking fun fact, did you know that the average Italian consumes 55 lbs of pasta every year? That’s heavier than the backpacks these students have been carrying on trip, as they hike into Italy and leave France behind! Cue the border crossing ceremony! The hikers arrived in Courmayeur today after a challenging but fun hike with some beautiful views of the Mont Blanc massif along the way. After hiking about 12 miles today, our strong explorers will be rewarded with a rest day tomorrow, hopefully adding to part of that 55 lb pasta stat!
Colorado’s Rocky Mountains (CRM)
Did you know that Colorado is the only state in history to turn down hosting the Olympics! But no worries, because we have some Olympic athletes of our own. The CRM crew showed their professional athlete skills today for some whitewater rafting! After the Olympians made their way to Fort Collins for some rafting, they traveled back for their final night at Glacier Basin. The crew will finish off their night with a tasty camp dinner and some fun games before winding down for some rest before heading to explore Boulder tomorrow!
Caribbean Service Virgin Islands (CSVI)
For our musical lovers (and history buffs) in the audience, the one and only Alexander Hamilton is from St. Croix! Although our students did not learn about U.S. history today, they did learn about coral during their community service! The island enjoyers spent their day with the Coral Lab to learn all about how important coral is for reefs. The crew also did some community service with the nature conservancy, cleaning, prepping, and sorting recycling collected from around the island. This group has been loving their time on the beautiful beaches of St. Croix, and we can’t see what they get up to in their final few days of trip!
Dolomite Mountains & Croatian Coast (DMCC)
There are over 400 bridges live in the charming city of Venice, where our students are flying out of today. Although we are sad this adventure has ended, these students will have stories to tell and memories to hold onto for forever. They summited so many peaks, swam in beautiful lakes and seas, and made friends for life. We are so proud of all this group has accomplished, and maybe they’ll see some of those bridges from their plane window as they wish Italy farewell!
Europe Coast to Coast (ECC)
To honor the entire continent this crew covered, there are over 200 languages spoken in Europe (spoiler alert: that’s less than 1/5th of the number of miles ECC students rode). What a TRIP! These bikers are flying out of Venice today after crushing a total of… drumroll please… 1,147 miles!!! We are still in awe of the effort every student in this crew had to charge all the way across Europe with smiling faces, even when the riding got hard. We wish this group the best of luck on whatever their next adventure will be as they fly out of Venice today, although, were not sure what adventure could really top this one!
Iceland Mountains & Coast (IMC)
Iceland has over 10,000 waterfalls, and our nordic explorers were lucky enough to appreciate more than one today! Today, the IMC crew sea kayaked in the shadow of Mt. Kirkjufell, which is claimed to be the most photographed mountain in the world. After their kayaker excursion, the group made their way to Grundarfoss waterfall, which was a small hike to see a tall waterfall: 230 feet, to be exact! The sun shined for them as they made their way back to camp and fell asleep dreaming about 9,999 waterfalls, because they already got to hike one!
Pyrenees Mountains & Coast (PMC)
Have you heard of eating 12 grapes to kick off the new year? That originated in Spain, believed to bring good luck and prosperity for the year to come! And today our Spanish crew sea-kayaked in the morning and enjoyed some (hopefully grape) juice boxes in a beautiful cave. Don’t just take our word for it. Cave pictures included below! After their kayaking, the adventurers explored the town of Sitges where they found out exactly why this town is renowned for its art. Tomorrow our crew leaves behind the beautiful beaches of Sitges for the equally stunning ones of Port de la Selva. Oh to be a PMCer!
Vermont to Montreal (VM)
We know our bikers will be passing an international border on this trip, but did you know that at one time their route would have passed 2 of them? Vermont was an independent country from 1777 to 1791 before it became the 14th state in the union. The more you know! Parallel to Lake Champlain, our bikers made their 28 mile journey through farmlands to Shelburne, just 12 miles south of Burlington where our crew will continue on to tomorrow for service and city time. Look out Burlington, here they come!
