Today was day three of the summer at Apogee, and we couldn’t be having more fun! Today, three more trips officially started; Maine Coast Junior, Costa Rica Mountains and Coast, and Caribbean Service: Virgin Islands. Our leaders were so excited to finally meet their groups and kick off the summer at last! Games were played, yummy meals were had, and new friends were met! As for our crews a day or two into their adventure, they had a packed day of hiking, biking, kayaking, and exploring in their spectacular corners of the world! Now that they are soon to be (or already, for our Europe-based folks) tucked into their tents for the evening, here’s a little glimpse into what they got up to today! Alaska Mountains & Coast (AKMC)
S’moresland, population: eight happy campers! Here, in this remote and unassuming enclave of rural Alaska, the marshmallows are almost as abundant as the Moose (or is it Meese?) In any case, these intrepid adventurers conquered the inaugural hike of their trip today. Then, they headed back to camp to prepare for tomorrow’s backcountry mission—a journey that will undoubtedly bring them within sight of some magnificent flora and fauna!
Alps Explorer A (AXA)
Today, our AXA friends went on a hike in Grachen! They got familiar with the trail by playing classic Apogee games such as Woosh and Wavelength along the way and saw their first of what is sure to be many cows. Then, traipsing along a beautiful stream, they found themselves by the shore of a gorgeous lake before hitting the town to sample some local delicacies!
Alps Explorer B (AXB)
Day Three in the Alps! On this fine morning, our brave voyagers waved farewell to the quaint log cabins nearby their mountain retreat and set out upon the majestic slopes of the Mattertal Valley. On their way, they spied a glacier and some Swiss sheep. Who knows what new marvels await them tomorrow as they continue to explore the mountains?
Colorado’s Rocky Mountains (CRM)
Today, these fearless troopers conquered their first hike in the Rocky Mountains! They started their day with some yummy bagels and then soldiered onto the trailhead where they played an enthusiastic round of Bumpity Bump Bump Bump (if you know, you know). Afterwards, they began their trek towards some beautiful views, and then made their way back down to observe a waterfall. Then, they reclined by the lakeside to dip their toes in the water and eating a hearty lunch. Things sure off to a great start in the Rockies!
Costa Rica Mountains & Coast (CRMC)
Now that the trip has officially begun, the fun can really begin! The group is en route to their first evening’s accommodations, and after a long travel day for most of the crew, they’ll be thrilled to settle in on the Costa Rican coast for some shut eye. Tomorrow the adventure begins in earnest, as the group will go ziplining in the morning, and then spend time exploring the magical rainforest that dominates the area near where they’re staying. But first, a delicious group dinner and some well-earned rest await these travelers!
Caribbean Service: Virgin Islands (CSVI)
It’s official — the first Caribbean Service: Virgin Islands group has touched down in St. Croix! After a day traveling from far and wide, Aaron and Nina welcomed their eleven tireless travelers and made their way to their tropical accommodations for the evening. While the main island activities will start tomorrow, the group didn’t waste any time getting the fun started today with a delicious pasta dinner and some classic Apogee games (is that a spirited game of Hacky Sack I spy?!) We can’t wait to see what this crew gets up to next!
Dolomite Mountains & Croatian Coast (DMCC)
Today the DMCC journeyed to South Tyrol, where they stretched their legs on an afternoon hike in the beautiful hills surrounding their campground. Then, they retired to peruse the picturesque byways of the local village, soaking in the plentiful summer sunshine. Does it get any dreamier than that!? Tomorrow, our friends will begin their first of five days on an epic sojourn in the Dolomites!
Maine Coast College Essay (MCCE)
Today the MCCE crew dove head first into their first essay writing workshop and participated in a classic college pastime — making new friends on the campus quad! After a morning of getting those creative juices flowing, our favorite poetic posse hit the water for an afternoon of sea kayaking in Casco Bay. Feeling refreshed and inspired by the breathtaking views of Maine’s coastline, they are all geared up for tomorrow’s day of writing and college admissions workshops!
Maine Coast Junior (MCJ)
Our Maine Coast Junior group gathered in Massachusetts this afternoon and got to know one another as they embarked on a quick jaunt up to their first campground in Maine! Sara and Aria can’t wait to get to know this group better over the course of their upcoming adventurous week. Their first evening together was spent with some fun games in camp and a scrumptious dinner together, and they’ll go to sleep tonight full of excitement for what the first full day of the trip has in store for them tomorrow!
Maine’s Downeast Explorer (DEX)
Maine’s Downeast Explorer kicked off their day in true Maine fashion with a feast of blueberry pancakes! They then packed up camp and made their way to Acadia National Park, where the “downeast” part of their adventure officially begins! Our intrepid explorers didn’t want to miss a moment on the beautiful coast of Acadia this afternoon, so they went for a hike and swim before settling into camp for the evening. Tomorrow, they will spend more time hiking and exploring all the incredible secrets and vistas that Acadia has to offer!
New England Mountains & Coast (NEMC)
Day Three of New England Mountains and Coast began bright and bright and early with some group bonding games (Animal House Party, anyone?) and whitewater rafting! They had a blast splashing around in the river before they headed to the nearest canteen to replenish their provisions. Tomorrow, they will attempt to conquer another peak in the legendary White Mountains!
Northwest Mountains & Coast (NWMC)
Today marked day two of discovering the wonders of Olympic National Park for our Northwest Mountains & Coast crew! They conquered the Hurricane Ridge hike and snapped a celebratory photo while enjoying 360-degree views of the Olympic peninsula. They then made their way back to camp for some goofy games, good eats, and relaxation before another big day of adventuring in the park tomorrow!
Vermont to Montreal (VM)
Our Vermont to Montreal cyclists got their journey started in style today! They started the morning off with a thorough bike safety lesson before they hit the road for the first time. They then did a quick grocery shop along their route, and completed the day’s ride in time to enjoy a leisurely lunch in camp! That left plenty of time for fun and games in tonight’s campground, where they rounded off a very full day with a delicious dinner together. The first steps – er, should I say, pedals? – towards Montreal have been taken, and this group can’t wait for the next ones tomorrow!
