Day 38: Food is FUEL!

That’s right folks – today, we’re taking you on a journey of all the delicious foods that Apogee families experience on trip. We’re talking 6 glorious meals every day, from breakfast to first snack to lunch and second snack all the way to dinner and dessert. Food is a critical part of any good adventure (food is fuel!), and we’re going to look at each trip’s unique cuisine that our finely trained leaders cook up every day.

So without further ado…

Cape Cod & the Islands (CI)

Today, this group is continuing their ride up the coast of the Cape to Wellflleet, where they will have a rest day tomorrow! These CI-ers are going bananas that their trip is already about half way done! They may even get to cheer on the amazing Pan-Mass Challenge bike race that will be cruisin’ right past them soon! Keep crushin’ it CI!

Also… How tasty do those donuts look??

New England Mountains & Coast A (NEMCA)

Day 3 is off to a great start! Beautiful day of hiking in the White Mountains in New Hampshire! With a few more days of hiking in the whites to come, this group has a lot to look forward to as they begin to really settle in and take ownership! Meals continue to be simple, tasty, nutritious and plentiful as they learn to fit multiple days-worth of food in their packs! Keep it up NEMCA!

New England Mountains & Coast B (NEMCB)

Similarly to NEMCA, NEMCB is hiking their first day in the White Mountains, a gem of the Northeast! They enjoyed the beautiful Pink Line trail and capped it off with an amazing swim. Each day only gets better and more beautiful than the last! This group is putting some miles on their feet and growing closer by the hours! Seems like a good, hearty pasta dinner is on order with a special topping…trail spice!

Colorado’s Rocky Mountains A (CRMA)

Today is the first full day for CRMA! Such an exciting time – new friends, new foods, new places, and new experiences all around! In Rocky Mountain National Park, this group is getting into some thinner air as they enter into some seriously awesome elevation! You know what that means?? Plenty of water and eating some deliciously salty snacks! It is likely that they will see some cool wildlife as well!

Colorado’s Rocky Mountains B (CRMB)

Similarly to CRMA, CRMB is enjoying their first full day in the beautiful Rocky Mountains! Group bonding is really starting to take place as everyone is beginning to settle in and get to know each other. And no better place to do it than in beautiful Colorado! No surprise here, but plenty of water and salty snacks will be consumed throughout the day to ensure everyone feels happy and healthy at the top of the world!!

Just waiting for someone to be the Rose to this lonely Jack…

Caribbean Service (CS)

Today, the CS crew got to work, after spending a nice night in Vieques. They got to hang with local Reach for Success kids and got a sweet look at local culture, all while practicing Spanish! Rumor has it that these folks also enjoyed a delightful Puerto Rican lunch afterwards – did someone say empanadas?

Maine Coast College Essay (MCCE)

Whoop whoop whoop – 3 cheers if you’re pumped to get this show on the road! This crew is about to eat paragraphs for breakfast, sentences for snacks and essays for dinner. All jokes aside, they were fortunate to enjoy a nice night in with delicious local cuisine while bonding over stories that might, just might, be that perfect idea that ends up becoming the college essay of their (and our) dreams. Keep dreaming and enjoy the wonderful week ahead, college-bound creators!

Maine Coast Photo (MCP)

This awesome crew kicks off what is sure to be an incredible week ahead of them with smiles, the occasional snapshot, and best of all, a delicious dinner for everyone to really get to know each other. I wonder what they’re having… maybe local wild blueberries? Some local seafood perhaps?

Maine’s Downeast Explorer (DEX)

After finishing up a sweet paddle back to the mainland, our fabulous DEX-ers hopped out of the kayaks and set up in Acadia for a few days of exploring and hiking. This evening they enjoyed a delicious dinner and a nice early bedtime. I’ll be dreaming of that delicious looking ice cream!

Vermont to Montréal A (VMA)

Nothing says resting like enjoying some delicious food, which is exactly what this amazing crew enjoyed after switching out the biking gloves for plastic ones and helping out with some community service today. They built up a good appetite serving the beautiful Burlington area and rewarded themselves for a good day’s work with some leisure time in camp later in the day. I hear Burlington is famous for its Maple Creemees… Well done, VMA-ers!

Now time for a… Mega photo blast!

Vermont to Montréal B (VMB)

This stellar crew made a splash today as they hopped off the bikes for nice paddle across the gorgeous Lake Champlain. After that, they continued along a beautiful Vermont ridge and cruised downhill into camp for a day of community service and rest tomorrow! Hopefully they have worked up an appetite for the famed Vermonster ice cream sundae. Only time will tell. Rest well and great job to this crew!

Costa Rica Language & Service (CRLS)

CRLS had their first full day in the classroom and got a taste of service as well! A beautiful day of Spanish by the river and capping it off with some local fruits and tastes of what Costa Rica is all about. I hear the plantains and mangoes are especially delicious this time of year!

Costa Rica Mountains & Coast (CRMC)

Today CRMC enjoyed a nice hike through the Chirripo Valley in Costa Rica! Looks like snake might be on the menu for tonight! I heard it tastes like chicken! (For all those concerned- we are just kidding) This group is really immersed in the local Costa Rican culture as they explore small towns and vast rain forest!

Seems to me like this snake heard the thundering footsteps of CRMC and got scared right out of its own skin! I guess this makes for a great souvenir??

California Mountains & Coast (CMCA)

This crew has quite the few days ahead of them, with… *drumroll please*… Backcountry coming up! Woohoo! They picked up the freshest produce in preparation for a few big days in the backcountry and enjoyed a delicious hydrating dinner. Eat up these views and enjoy the last pics before a stretch in the wilderness from this awesome group. It seems as though this group has picked up a new addition to the group… Her name is Meloney, and she’s the sweetest one out there!

California Mountains & Coast (CMCB)

Did someone say backcountry? That’s what awaits this awesome crew in the next few days. Like the other CMC group, this crew spent the day preparing for Yosemite’s finest with careful packing, grocery shopping, and a nice day hike as a final boost before the heights of this gorgeous national park.  The only other thing this sky-high is the level of awesomeness of this crew!

Alaska Mountains & Coast (AKMC)

Alaska, oh, Alaska! Today, this ferocious group of hikers is doing a lake loop hike before they climb over a gorgeous pass and finish off their day with a spectacular view of yet another lake! So many lakes, wow. At least that means plenty of opportunities to catch some salmon for dinner! That sounds delicious right now. Is it lunchtime yet?…

These backcountry adventurers will have more pics for us soon!

Northwest Explorer (NWXA)

Does anyone hear that distant rumbling? Why it must be… NWXA emerging victorious from the backcountry! This group of intrepid explorers has just spent SIX amazing days in the backcountry and we could not be more excited to hear about (and see pictures of!) their amazing experiences. Wondrous pictures are soon to come.

Northwest Explorer (NWXB)

It’s official! NWXB has ventured into the backcountry of Olympic National Park and began the journey of a lifetime! While we’re not sure exactly what scrumptious meals Morgan and Jake have planned, we can be sure that trail mix is essential for those long and rewarding days on the trail.

Pacific Coast (PCA)

BIG day for PCA today as they ride 60 miles into Mendocino, California! Not only will they be peddlin’ some gnarly mileage, but they will also be climbing ye’ old Leggett Mountain! Oh so ‘legit’! One more well deserved day off tomorrow before they reach San Francisco!! I think they deserve some ice cream, what do you guys think?

Pacific Coast (PCB)

“On the road again! I can’t wait to get one the road again!” And that, Apogee families and friends, is exactly what PCB is doing today as they ride a solid 47 miles today. It’s a warm one out there so stay hydrated, my friends, and brace yourselves for Leggett Mountain!! I’m sure watermelon is sounding pretty good right about now. Suit up and fuel up, WOOOOOOOO!

Scottish Highlands (SH)

One thing I can promise you about the Scottish Highlands trip is that with Gennaro and Michelle as their leaders, we can guarantee there will be no “generic” meals. But on the other hand, this group gets to walk across the ancient little Bridge of Orchy today! They also get to sleep in these comfortable shelter pods where they will be able to explore a remote village nearby. So cool! So quaint! So Scottish!

Alps Explorer (AX)

Big descent into Courmayeur (yea good luck pronouncing that) today! Also, apparently this campsite tonight makes a MEAN Nutella Pizza! AX has a well-deserved day off tomorrow, so they are enjoying the beautiful hike today through glacial valleys and other geological wonders! So I guess, all in all, they are enjoying the Alps – you know, those tall pointy things in the backgrounds of all of these pictures.

Pyrenees Mountains & Coast (PMC)

Sorry, can I just take a second to catch my breath? I think I lost it after seeing some of these amazing views this awesome crew has earned! The Pyrenees are home to a wide array of delicacies, and these folks have enjoyed lots of delightful local fare, like goat and sheep cheeses from the region. Pastries also abound in this area from local shops – my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

America Coast to Coast (ACC)

These speedy road warriors draw ever closer to their ocean destination in San Diego, as they continue to crush the mileage. Hard to believe that this incredible group is nearly done with this wild adventure! The crew made it to their final state today and are feeling very proud! Side note- a local jam and delicious lemonade can be made from the fruit at the top desert cacti. I bet these guys could go for a cold glass of Prickly Pear lemonade right now!
