Day 36: Smiles for Miles!

It’s hard to believe that August is already here! June and July have been great – filled with beautiful weather, gorgeous views, and awesome adventures. We can’t wait to see what the last month of summer has in store for our students and staff in the field!

Skip to a Specific Trip: CI, NEMCANEMCB, CS, DEX, VMAVMB, CRMCCMCA, CMCB, AKMC, NWXA, NWXB, PCA, PCBSH, AX, PMCACC

Cape Cod & the Islands (CI)

Dune-backed beaches, cedar-shingled houses, few permanent residents, and smooth sweet pavement. Today our cyclists on CI hopped on their pedals, strapped on their helmets, and crushed miles and miles of Nantucket road. We call it a challenge day, CI called it a breeze. Move aside, single-speed beach bikers, and make way for CI!

New England Mountains & Coast A (NEMCA)

Trip start alert! New England Mountains and Coast A got together today to begin what will be an incredible ten days of exploration in the forests, mountains, and coasts of Maine and New Hampshire. We can’t wait to follow along!

New England Mountains & Coast B (NEMCB)

What’s better than one trip start? Two trip starts! NEMCB, suspiciously similar to NEMCA, gathered together today, ready to set fourth on what will be an awesome, adventure filled trip. We can’t wait for the many multi-element activity photos to come!

Leaving room for two students joining the group later tonight

Caribbean Service (CS)

Surf’s up – and thumbs up! Caribbean Service spent the day on the water testing their balance and wave riding abilities. If they’re as good at surfing as they are at giving back, we’re sure they absolutely crushed today!

Maine’s Downeast Explorer (DEX)

Pop Quiz: When paddling in a tandem kayak, do you move twice as fast as a single kayak or at the same speed but with half the effort? DEX is on the water today exploring Casco Bay (and this very deep question) and couldn’t have better weather for it!

Vermont to Montréal A (VMA)

Picturesque farmland, rolling hills, and quiet country roads were on the docket for VMA today as they continued their pedal through Vermont, riding parallel to Lake Champlain. Vermont’s mountainous terrain leads to some lovely scenery, but also some poor cell service. Crossing our fingers they’re able to get a photo our way soon!

Vermont to Montréal B (VMB)

Another gorgeous day cruising through the countryside of Vermont! Today, the VMB team pedaled through Middlebury on their way to Lake Champlain, stopping briefly to flex their muscles with a friend along the way.

Costa Rica Mountains & Coast (CRMC)

Zzzippp!! Zipwiring, aerial rope sliding, Tyrolean traversing, canopy touring, exploring the aerial runways… however you want to put it, CRMC went Zipling today and had a blast. The team rode ten different lines, including one that was almost an entire mile long!

California Mountains & Coast (CMCA)

The CMCA group started their morning giving back. Wildfires have been a big issue for the state of California over the last five years, so our group teamed up with a non-profit organization that focuses on providing food and shelter to families displaced by wildfires. Way to go CMCA! Tomorrow the team heads towards Yosemite National Park.

California Mountains & Coast (CMCB)

CMCB is back on the water today, ripping through California surf in sea kayaks. After starting their day with a paddle through Tamales Bay that ended on the mainland, the team waved goodbye to their boats, hopped into the van, and drove to Sonora for some grocery shopping and laundry. Tomorrow their adventure brings them to Yosemite Valley!

Alaska Mountains & Coast (AKMC)

AKMC emerged from the backcountry today! We heard from Garth and it sounds like their journey was super smooth and tons of fun – not to mention ridiculously scenic. Next on the agenda? Showers, most certainly!

Northwest Explorer (NWXA)

Another beautiful day in the backcountry of the North Cascades – this one with 8 miles of hiking scheduled. Day three in the backcountry with no service means we’re halfway to seeing some snaps of their smiling faces! Stay tuned.

Northwest Explorer (NWXB)

Today NWXB swapped their hiking boots for camp shoes as they enjoyed a well-deserved rest day and ferry ride towards Olympic National Park! Soon they’ll be gearing up for the challenge portion of their trip – an extended stay in the backcountry.

Pacific Coast (PCA)

PCA had a heck of a day today! Picture this: a morning cruising along rolling California hills, followed by an afternoon clicking through the bike gears and tackling climbs. Then, cap it off with one of the coolest rides through the “Avenue of Giants” in the Redwood Forest. Does it get any better?!

Pacific Coast (PCB)

The PCB team spent the day off the bikes volunteering with Food for People, a non-profit organization focused on fighting hunger and providing communities with healthy, high quality food. Way to go PCB!

Scottish Highlands (SH)

Today our intrepid hikers headed from the shores of Loch Lommond into the wee foot hills of the highlands. The trail took them past old stone houses and pastures full of sheep. They have absolutely earned their day off tomorrow!

Alps Explorer (AX)

Wowza, what an ascent! Today the AX team tested their calf muscles and hiked up to Col du Bonhomme and beyond into the Vallee des Glaciers as well as the hamlet of Les Chapieux. Along the way the group passed by some lingering snow and a popular pilgrimage chapel, Notre-Dame de la Gorge. Blue skies and beautiful mountains, galore!

Pyrenees Mountains & Coast (PMC)

PMC woke up, had a delicious breakfast, laced up their boots, and got after it! Right out of the gate, PMC tackled the biggest pass of the day and, once on top, were met with amazing views. From there on, the team spent the afternoon hiking along beautiful lakes and rivers on their way to Colomina. Sadly service prevented us from getting photos (though they tried multiple times!) so we can’t wait for the cellular universe to cooperate and send those our way ASAP!

America Coast to Coast (ACC)

ACC began their ride in Phoenix, Arizona today. A few fun facts? Phoenix has franchises in all four major sports leagues, NO daylight savings, and only one sports team with a winning record. Without question, ACC continues to be the most athletic group in each town they ride through. The group ended their ride this evening in Wickenburg, Arizona, a small where the Bola Tie was invented in 1949. Perhaps they’ll rock their own the rest of the trip!
