Day 17: Saturday, Sunshine & Scotland

If you woke up this morning, and felt like today was a particularly special Saturday, you were on to something! Here in the Aposphere we had not one, not two, but FIVE trips start today. From the sunny coasts of California to the shores of Loch Lomond, our students are gathering and ready to embark on incredible adventures. And all the while, our other trips are enjoying spectacular Saturdays of their own.

Skip to a Specific Trip: MCJ, CI, NEMC, CRM, GSA, MCCE, CRLS, CMCA, CMCB, AKMC, NWXA, NWXB, PCA, PCBSH, AX, PMC, ECC1, ECC2 ACC

Maine Coast Junior (MCJ)

Maine Coast Junior is live! Anna and Walter met their students just outside of Boston and made the trek up to their quaint campground in Maine. Word on the street is that they set up their tents like pros!

Cape Cod & the Islands (CI)

Michael & Joanna’s Cape Cod crew enjoyed a beautiful day as they rode to the ferry terminal that took them from the Woods Hole, MA out to Martha’s Vineyard. Blue skies abound!

New England Mountains & Coast (NEMC)

After a top notch breakfast of pancakes and bacon, our NEMC team hit New Hampshire’s Androscoggin River for an exciting day of whitewater rafting. Did they look good doing it, too? You better believe it.

Colorado’s Rocky Mountains (CRM)

After a day of rock climbing yesterday, Eddie & Jordan’s crew hit the trails again today for another day of exploring all that Rocky Mountain National Park has to offer. Unfortunately, their isolated experience in nature doesn’t translate well to cell service, so we don’t have a photo by press time. We’ll upload any if they’re able to get some through!

Golden State Adventure (GSA)

Jonathon and Cassidy and their fearless explorers waved “goodbye” to mainland California today and eagerly greeted their new home for the next few nights: Santa Cruz Island on Channel Islands National Park. After riding the ferry and keeping their eyes peeled for seals, dolphins, and whales, they explored the surrounded sea caves by kayak! Unfortunately, there’s no cell service at all out there, so we’ll have to wait a few days for photo evidence.

Maine Coast College Essay (MCCE)

Our favorite essayists spent the morning revising their papers with their Master Writing Instructor before transitioning to the beautiful Maine coast for an afternoon at the beach (and then some more writing afterwards). After all, we can all agree that a fresh sea breeze is the perfect way to get into the writing mindset!

Costa Rica Language & Service (CRLS)

It’s Day Five for the J&J squad down in Costa Rica, which marks the group’s last day in Turrialba. After a morning of Spanish lessons, the group spent the afternoon volunteering at the Hogar de Indegenas, where they spent time with some local mothers and children as well as joined a game of soccer! Tomorrow: Manuel Antonio National Park!

California Mountains & Coast (CMCA)

The stoke is high, the sun is shining, and the students have arrived. From the mountains to the sea, we can’t wait to see the beautiful places these students will be!

California Mountains & Coast (CMCB)

California Mountains & Coast Bravo is live! Anna and Jeff met their new squad at the San Francisco airport today before setting off north to their first night’s accommodations. The question on everyone’s mind: will we get a classic – and trademarked – Day One Van Picture? Fingers crossed!

Alaska Mountains & Coast (AKMC)

Coming from all corners of the US, our intrepid AKMCers assembled under the Alaskan sun (and trust us, there’s a lot of it this time of year). Boots laced and ready, we can’t wait to follow their adventures through the Last Frontier!

Northwest Explorer (NWXA)

Hellooooo San Juan Islands! Our NWX Alpha squad first took a ferry over to Guemes Island before hitting the gorgeous waters of the San Juans. They made their way to Cypress Island, which they’ll call home for the next three days. Anyone else jealous?

Northwest Explorer (NWXB)

New day, same backcountry. What else can we say? Jake and Morgan’s team settled in for their penultimate night in the wilds. There better be a coordinated and stunning photo montage at the end of this!

Pacific Coast (PCA)

Domi and Daryl’s Daring Devils can almost smell it! The famous sourdough of San Francisco that is. They’re only about 60 miles (as the gull flies) from the Golden Gate. And that somehow translates into two more days of beautiful riding. Something tells us they’re not complaining!

Pacific Coast (PCB)

This straight from Meg & Andrew, “PCB in all their glory on our beautiful morning ride, crushing 50 miles before lunch! (Almost)”

Scottish Highlands (SH)

Today marks the beginning of our first Scottish adventure of the Summer- what a day! After gathering in Edinburgh, these adventurers headed to their first campsite on the bonny banks of Loch Lommond.

Alps Explorer (AX)

Another border crossing for our intrepid Alps Explorers! After starting the Tour du Mont Blanc 10 days ago in Switzerland, they crossed from Italy back into Switzerland this morning.
“Border crossing into Switzerland through some high winds – back in the mother country!!”

Pyrenees Mountains & Coast (PMC)

Today our fearless hikers gathered in Barcelona to begin their grand adventure. We can’t wait to live in envy of their upcoming thirteen days of adventure.

Europe Coast to Coast 1 (ECC1)

What goes up has got to come down! ECC1 began the day climbing and spent the latter half zipping down some lengthy descents. Sometimes it’s nice letting gravity do the work. We also have it on good authority that they practically bathed in gelato.

Europe Coast to Coast 2 (ECC2)

Bonjour! Or should we say Guten Tag? ECC2 hit the hills today – specifically the Vosges Mountains. As the team worked their way up the hills, clicking through the low gears, they probably began to notice some German language and architecture as they head into the heart of the Alsace Lorraine region.

America Coast to Coast (ACC)

Did you know that Arkansas does not have any professional sports teams. What does Arkansas have, you ask? The World Championship Duck Calling Contest. And Apogee’s America Coast to Coast! ACC continues to rip their way through the Toothpick State and record some serious mileage. Go ACC!
