Where Service Meets Lasting Impact: Reflections From Our Caribbean Scouting Trips

Written by Lucia Daranyi, Apogee Assistant Director

Experiencing Community Service Travel in the Caribbean

Last month, my colleague and Apogee Director, Will Robertson, and I traveled to Puerto Rico to meet with our community service partners and scout the incredible places where our Caribbean Service: Puerto Rico students and leaders will be working, learning, and exploring this summer. After wrapping up in Puerto Rico, I made a quick hop over to St. Croix—just 90 miles away—to connect with our Caribbean Service: Virgin Islands service partners and revisit the vibrant island where our groups spend time giving back.

These scouting trips reminded me just how special our Apogee Adventures teen community service programs are. From the meaningful impact students make, to the cultural immersion they experience, to the simple joy of exploring the Caribbean, these trips offer something truly unforgettable.

Impact on Local Communities

Our teen summer community service trips are built around partnerships with organizations making a real difference in their local communities. Throughout our travels, we heard again and again how grateful our partners are for the hard work our students contribute each year.

Whether it’s supporting sustainable farming efforts in Puerto Rico or helping with trail maintenance alongside The Nature Conservancy in St. Croix, our groups’ contributions are felt long after each trip ends. Because we invest in long-term relationships with these organizations, the impact grows year after year, and we’re incredibly proud of the positive change our students help create.

For me, one of the most meaningful parts of these teen service travel programs is seeing students understand that their work matters. They aren’t just visiting a destination—they’re contributing to it, learning from it, and building connections with the people who call it home.

Valuable learning and cultural experience

Another highlight of our scouting trip was being reminded of the deep cultural learning that happens on our Caribbean teen community service travel programs. Students don’t just visit these places—they connect with them in meaningful, lasting ways.

They taste regional foods (mofongo, anyone?), talk with local volunteers and community members, and learn directly from the people who steward the land and run the programs we support. Our partners are generous sources of knowledge, and both students and leaders come away with a richer understanding of the culture, history, and environment of the islands.

This kind of cultural immersion for teens is a defining part of our Caribbean service trips. By combining hands-on community service with authentic local experiences, students gain perspective, independence, and a deeper appreciation for the places they visit.

We’ll admit it: everyone in the office wishes we could tag along for another round of mofongo!

And of Course… the Fun

Let’s not forget one of the best parts of our Caribbean teen community service travel programs: they’re an absolute blast. Alongside meaningful community service, students spend time snorkeling, surfing, swimming, and relaxing on some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.

These moments of adventure and connection are just as memorable as the service work itself. Whether it’s exploring vibrant coral reefs, catching waves, or sharing downtime with new friends by the water, students experience the balance that makes these teen summer service trips so special.

It’s this combination—purposeful work, cultural immersion, and genuine fun—that sticks with both students and leaders long after the trip ends. They remember the experience not only for the meaningful impact they made, but also for the laughter, adventure, and friendships formed along the way.

Looking Ahead to Another Summer of Service

Scouting trips like these always remind me how lucky we are to run teen community service travel programs in such extraordinary places. Our time in Puerto Rico and St. Croix reaffirmed not only the beauty of these islands, but also the meaningful work our students contribute to each year.

We’re deeply grateful for the strong, long-standing partnerships that make these Caribbean teen service trips possible. These relationships allow our students to engage in authentic community service, learn from local leaders, and experience the culture and environment of the islands in a thoughtful, responsible way.

We can’t wait for another season of meaningful service, cultural discovery, and Caribbean sunshine—and for a new group of students to experience the impact of these programs for themselves.

Spots are extremely limited on our Caribbean service trips—particularly for girls this summer. If this type of experience is of interest, we encourage you to be in touch soon to learn more about remaining availability.
