Known as the “Green Mountain State,” Vermont is synonymous with outdoor fun. On this 13-day adventure your group will day-hike southern Vermont’s greatest peaks, volunteer with the National Forest Service, backpack a stretch of the historic Long Trail and take an overnight kayaking trip on Lake Champlain.

Hiking Southern VT
We’ll meet in Northampton, MA and travel by van to a Vermont State Park north of Manchester. Beckoned by the stunning green hills, we’ll hit the trail for two days of day-hikes in southern Vermont and summit peaks like Mount Equinox.

Community Service & Backpacking the Long Trail
As volunteers for half a day, we'll work with forest rangers to preserve the natural beauty we've just enjoyed before transferring north to get ready for our backcountry hike. With provisions on our backs, we’ll set out on the historic Long Trail which will take us into the heart of Vermont’s wilderness. The oldest long-distance trail in the U.S., the Long Trail was the inspiration for the better known Appalachian Trail. Together we’ll make our own mark in Long Trail history as we conquer rugged peaks and enjoy spectacular views.

Kayaking Lake Champlain
After five days on the trail, we’ll emerge as weathered and accomplished backpackers. Our tired legs will get a hard earned rest while we transfer to North Hero, VT and look forward to kayaking. With professional kayak guides, we will paddle to a remote island state park in the middle of Lake Champlain and camp at water’s edge. We’ll paddle back to the mainland the next day, and round out this amazing adventure with a celebratory dinner at a restaurant in the vibrant city of Burlington. On our last day, we’ll transfer to Boston to reconnect with parents and say sad goodbyes.
