Monday, Monday
So yes, with Chad gone I have completely slacked on keeping the blog updated. He set a high bar from the outset of the summer with daily posts (lot of pressure there). It’s not that I don’t have a good excuse, though. Since Thursday I’ve logged over 1200 miles in van shuttles for our Cape Cod and Coast to Quebec groups…and I have to drive to Boston this evening to finish our Cape trips tomorrow. So that coupled with wrapping things up with leaders here in Brunswick has kept me mostly away from a computer.
So without further ado:
I saw both Cape groups yesterday, and they all looked great! Both groups were excited to explore Boston today and celebrate with a final dinner. Mike and Aviva’s group rode from Wellfleet, MA to Provincetown yesterday and followed some of the Pan Mass Challenge Route, http://www.pmc.org/. They were cheered on by spectators for a good part of the ride which made their most challenging day, a hilly 25 miles, a lot more fun. Mike sent the below picture of his group this morning at Faneuil Hall.
Our America Coast to Coast (ACC) group did a fantastic job yesterday and clobbered their 106 mile ride through the California desert. 109 degree temps and no shade or amenities for over 90 miles couldn’t stop their momentum. Having Chad out there to provide water, fruit and salty snacks every 10 to 30 miles kept their motors running.
Today they were into Palm Desert by 1:30 PM PST. The mayor of Palm Desert heard the group was coming through his town and decided to honor our leaders, Nick and Maggie, by giving them keys to the city! And all the kids got Palm Desert pins and pens! The mayor's wife also pulled some strings and the group is spending this afternoon swimming at the Palm Desert Marriott Luxury Resort, http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/ctdca-desert-springs-a-jw-marriott-resort-and-spa-palm-desert/.
Tomorrow is their last big challenge day – a 3000 to 4000 foot climb out of the desert into the mountains. Assuming all continues according to schedule, they’ll swim in the Pacific on Wednesday… Stay tuned.
And I got a call this afternoon from Mike and Rachel out in Washington. They had a FANTASTIC backcountry hike in North Cascades National Park. Their group rocked their mileage every day and really motored along. They said everyone was getting along well and supporting one another. “Awesome group,” was a phrase Mike and Rachel repeated multiple times during our phone call. Everyone is excited for a day off in Bellingham tomorrow before they start their sea kayaking trip in the San Juans on Wednesday. Mike and Rachel snapped some low resolution camera images of the group while in the backcountry. See below.
Have a good night, and if I don’t post tomorrow, I’ll definitely post Wednesday.
