The Quick and Dirty Part II

Dear faithful readers:

So Chad has developed quite the blog following this summer with his witty words and colorful commentary. Unfortunately he’s off for the next two days…which leaves yours truly to pick up the slack. Creative writing was never my strength (I was a Geology major in college), so I’m going to keep it short and stick to the facts.

Our Maine Mountain Explorers with Drew and Rachel wrapped up their trip this morning. I saw them before they departed for Boston to finish up. The group was pretty dirty after a wet night on the Maine coast, but it was clear from the expressions on the kids’ faces that the trip was a huge success.

Rachel called in this morning from Washington to report that their Northwest Explorer crew was doing great. They did a super day-hike yesterday in the Cascades which got them above tree line and into a few snow fields for glissading. They planned to do another hike today and spend tomorrow doing service work with North Cascades National Park. They’ll enter the backcountry on Wednesday for their extended hike.

Cyrus and Lidia on Cape Cod had an interesting morning… A bike problem and a missing backpack delayed the group in Provincetown for awhile. However, by early afternoon they were set to go. Lidia called me this evening to say they rode 26 miles to Wellfleet, that spirits were high, and that everyone was looking forward to surfing tomorrow morning.

No word from Aviva and Mike’s Cape Cod group today, but I’ll make sure to touch base with them tomorrow.

Mike & Meaghan, our fearless Coast to Quebec 2B leaders, left us a voice mail message around 4 PM EST saying they were in Jackman after a 56 mile day from Greenville. They reported that all is well and that the kids are excited for rafting tomorrow. I also spoke to Cait on CQ2A this morning before they headed out to raft the Kennebec. It was a damp morning in Jackman, but she reiterated how much she and Evan loved their group. She said that despite the wet weather everyone was still having a lot of fun, and that they had a number of humorous stories to tell us when they returned.

Jess and Colby on NEMC4 pulled into Maine this afternoon. I got a brief glimpse of the crew as they stopped by to pick up mail. They did a great day hike yesterday in the White Mountains and climbed both Mt. Eisenhower and Mt. Pierce. Despite misty weather in the morning the clouds parted early afternoon to reveal some great views above tree line. Tomorrow they’ll sea kayak and then head to Portland for their final dinner.

And last but not least, our America Coast to Coasters entered AZ this afternoon and are staying indoors tonight in Springerville, AZ, elevation 6967 ft. Maggie called in to say they took a long break in Pie Town, NM this morning. Yes, it’s really called Pie Town, and the reason for their long break is that they were actually waiting for fresh pies to come out of the oven. And at the rate they’re burning calories they could probably afford to eat a whole pie each! We have a grainy cell phone picture below of the group in Pie Town.

That’s it for tonight. Check back soon.
