Final Friday! - Well, almost...
Apologies, Apogee Empire – but there is neither poetry nor drama in this evening’s post. Kevin and I have been busy today getting ready for our last “departure” of the season – our two Cape and Islands trips leaving tomorrow. Cliché though it may be, it’s very hard to believe just how quickly the summer has flown by!
We checked in briefly with Rachel and Drew’s mighty Mountaineers – they are doing wonderfully, and when we saw them, they looked remarkably scrubbed for people who had been in the woods for five days. They do their community service tomorrow – helping the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust fix up a new picnic area – and then head to Portland for a big night out.
Meaghan left me a great phone message earlier – she said that she, Mike, and their band of merry Quebecers are flying up and down the hills! She sent me a lovely picture of several of her students during their community service day – helping with the blueberry harvest near Camden.
I heard from Mike and Rachel today – way out in the Northwest. They had a great rafting experience yesterday – especially those lucky enough to qualify for a ducky (Mike was ambiguous about the ducky qualifications…). They’re off today for North Cascades National Park, which will be their home base for the next little stretch. Rachel sent along the below picture of the group playing a little ultimate Frisbee last night after rafting.
To those of our readers concerned after yesterday’s update from our Coast to Coasters: situation largely resolved! We were able to get parts overnighted to Socorro to get the damaged bike up and running. The bike store in town did very well by our group – I’m pretty sure Nick, Maggie & Co. bought the store out of tubes and tires. Nick, for example, had been riding on a 1970’s era tire that he picked up in eastern New Mexico several days ago – long story. A very nice woman at the ghost town I mentioned yesterday, Bette, took some great shots of our group – I’m including one here.
Have a great weekend! We may go post-less for a couple of days as I will be out of the office – we’ll see if we can talk Kevin into tearing himself away from bike parts and putting up a blog post or two.
