The Sun Shines On Apogee-ia

The Sun Shines on Apogee-ia!

A beautiful summer day up here in Maine, dear readers. Kevin and I had the privilege to start our second round of Coast to Quebec trips today. Mike and Meaghan, and Evan and Cait, had their groups bikes packed up and ready for the short ride to their first campground. If any of you have been following our humble blog since its inception, you may remember that it was absolutely pouring when we started our first Coast to Quebec trips. Believe me when I tell you it was much, much nicer to come home with a touch of sunburn this afternoon. It’s also really special to see the students at the outset of their adventure – in clean clothes and shy faces. In two weeks, they’ll be back after having ridden almost 500 miles, in significantly less clean clothes, but with huge smiles (and hopefully some of the tears that we know to be the hallmark of a truly successful Apogee trip…).

Also much closer to our midcoast Maine secret underground bunker, our Mountains and Coasters have descended from the mountains and made a break for the coast (aptly named trip, eh?). Tomorrow is a day on the water, exploring the nooks and crannies of Casco Bay from their kayaks. Then, astonishingly, they’ll have a final dinner together in Portland and say their farewells on Sunday.

Our Maine Mountaineers, led by the irrepressible Rachel and Drew, have one more day of warm-up hikes in the White Mountains before they head into the backcountry for the better part of a week on Sunday. In the meantime, they’re enjoying the bathrooms and showers in the front country!

When we heard from Lidia and Cyrus today, they had enjoyed a short ride to Wellfleet on the outer Cape, were playing a wild game of “Spoon” (with which I am professedly not familiar), and were greatly looking forward to some pizza and the new Harry Potter movie tonight.

And way, way down there and over to the left, our Coast to Coasters have made it into Throckmorton, Texas (called by some the Venice of Texas – actually, I don’t think that’s true…). They had blasted through 65 miles before lunch today and were enjoying some sweet, sweet air conditioning. They were also greeted by a sign welcoming them to town today – they continue to be overwhelmed the kindness, generosity and welcoming nature of the people they meet. In addition to a picture of the group in front of the sign, I’m including two more pictures of our ACC-ers – one the group riding through downtown Jacksboro, the other is the group with Jana, a reporter from the Jacksboro paper. After so long with no pictures from them, it only feels right to have an All-ACC blog night.

Have a great weekend!

~ Chad
