Wet, Wild Wednesday

Friends, I would dearly love to tell you all that the rain up here in New England has stopped, that it did not pour as though the oceans had been inverted, and that my poor dog does not look like a drowned rat – but all of that would be a malicious lie. Yes, indeed, it was another wet one up here. As a director of a small company that runs trips in the great outdoors, that’s about my least favorite line… Again, the weather folks are promising a big change for the next few days, but frankly, their promises ring hollow now.

But, good people of Apogea (a bad play on Pangea – I don’t think I’ll try it again), progress was made down south, in the west, and even up here in the soggy northeast! Cait and Evan are this summer’s first international travelers, having crossed the border into Quebec today – Cait sent along a nice picture of the group at the border. Meaghan and Mike were quiet today, as they were off the bikes and off the river – we’ll let you know when they cross the border.

Our Vermonters are, as I type, sitting down to their last meal together in Burlington before they go their separate ways tomorrow. Rachel sent us a picture of the girls hanging out in Burlington before dinner – please see below. They came off the lake earlier today after a two days of kayaking – we heard that while it was a rainy affair, they still got in some great kayaking. We also received a fantastic note from the kayak guides today – they were blown away by how polite, respectful, and just plain fun our group was. That’s always a nice note to get…

Just to the right, our Mountains and Coasters got in about six miles of good hiking today in the Crawford Notch area. Drew reported that the hiking was challenging, but beautiful. They are looking forward to another day or so of hiking before they shift gears and make for the Maine coast for a couple days of sea kayaking in and around Casco Bay (once known as the Calendar Bay as it has more than 365 islands – a little trivia for your Wednesday evening).

In Big Sky Country, our trippers are working their way towards Glacier National Park and their final big service project. Jess relayed that their project on the Blackfoot Reservation was a complete success. We also heard from a participant in the Choteau Fourth of July parade – she said that Jess, Colby and the kids were a huge help in getting all of the parade participants registered and ready to go.

In Mississippi, our guys are working their way have one more night before they cross the Big Muddy – it seems like they just got started! (I say that, but they might beg to differ…). We also heard from the good folks at the Magnolia Bible College, where our trip spent the night last night. They, too, were blown away with how polite our students were and how clean they left the place.

I hope these third-party reports aren’t seen as a tooting our own horn – on the contrary, we just want to share some of the good words we’ve received about many of your children!

~ Chad
